County Council Votes To Increase L-I-T

After a marathon four-hour meeting last night, the Grant County Council voted to increase the county’s Local Income Tax in 2019.  The measure still needs approval from other members of the county’s Tax Council before the increase is formally approved.
On a 5-to-2 vote, the County Council moved to increase the LIT from 2.25-percent to 2.55 percent.  But until other members of the Tax Council approve the plan, it cannot go into effect.  The Tax Council includes the County Council, city councils in Marion, Gas City and Jonesboro and several Town Councils around Grant County.  Those governmental units now have 30-days to decide.
A yes vote from the Marion City Council though would be enough to approve the LIT increase, since those two councils represent more than 50-percent of the population in Grant County.
