CAFO Application Denied By Area Plan Commission

On an 8-to-2 vote last night, the Grant County Area Plan Commission denied the application for a large Confined Animal Feeding Operation that was proposed for a site north of Marion.
Nolan Holloway’s plan was for an operation that would have housed more than nine-thousand hogs inside two buildings just off highway 15.  His proposal had earlier received approval from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
But neighbors objected to the plan, saying it would severely affect their property values.  They also had concerns about smell and the affect on area water supplies.
In the end, the “Chronicle-Tribune” reports that Plan Commission members say they were swayed to vote againt the CAFO based on the uncertainty of the proposal and how it would affect neighbors.
Holloway said afterwards that he’s not sure about the future of his proposed operation or any legal appeals he could pursue.
