BREAKING: Faulkner Academy closings its doors

After 10 years, the Dr. Robert H. Faulkner Academy is closing its doors.
The school announced its decision in a letter from the school’s board.
“When we started Faulkner Academy 10 years ago, our goal was to provide a better future for the children of Marion,” the board’s letter read. “… we are writing to inform you of a decision that was made in that same spirit. Our student’s enrollment has fallen below the level that is sustainable under the Charter Model. We have been working consistently to build that enrollment, but to this date it has not happened.”
The school said one of its priorities is to provide “excellent education” for its students, yet under current circumstances, it can no longer accomplish this.
The effective date for closure is Aug. 1, 2019.
The Academy will be partnering with Marion Community Schools.
“It is a painful decision but it is also a time to feel hopeful,” the letter continues. “Why hopeful? Because we believe the time is right to join forces with Marion Community Schools.
With changes we have seen in recent years, we can confidently embrace Marion Community Schools to rally around a purpose that is greater than ourselves, which is to provide our students the very best learning opportunities possible.”
According to the letter, many of the Academy’s teachers are transitioning to positions with Marion Community Schools.
“As you plan for your child’s education for the year, we have worked with Marion Community Schools to help with the transition to facilitate enrollment,” the letter says. “There will be an open meeting held Tuesday, July 30th at 6:00 pm at Faulkner Academy 1111 West 2nd Street, for you to ask any questions you may have of Faulkner Academy or Marion Community Schools. We look to join you as we partner with Marion Community Schools for the greater good of the community.”
