Esports league coming to Kokomo

Esports, or competitive video gaming, has come to Indiana high schools, and the first season ever kicks off on Monday.
Indiana High School Esports Network, or IHSEN, is the governing organization of the high school competition. 13 schools (list provided below) from across the state have signed up to participate in the fall opening season, competing in six titles, including: Super Smash Brothers, Rocket League, Overwatch, and more.
The opening season will have six weeks of play and will be followed by a championship tournament.
IHSEN was founded by John Robertson, a teacher at Tipton High School, and Nate Thompson, a teacher at Portage High School. “With esports growing as quickly as it is, we wanted to provide our students with an opportunity to participate.”
Esports has become a billion-dollar industry and allowing students to gain experience with a variety of connected careers now gives them a head start going forward.
The benefits don’t only come in the form of future jobs and experience. Students learn the same soft skills from esports that are part of traditional sports: teamwork, communication, creating and executing a plan and adapting on the fly.
“I love being able to get together with my team, some of whom I’d never really interacted with before, and working together to win! It’s really just a lot of fun.” commented Tipton High School junior, Karly Cruzan. “I just started playing last year, but it’s become one of my favorite things at school.
