Eastbrook discusses $15M building project, approves teacher pay raise

Plenty happened at last night’s Eastbrook school board meeting.
The board voted to give all classified employees a three percent raise, with some positions receiving a larger raise. The administration received a two percent raise, according to Superintendent Brett Garrett.
The board also had its first preliminary determination hearing on a $15 million proposed building project to upgrade its facilities such as heating, electrical and air conditioning units across the district’s buildings.
“They’re absolutely essential and critical,” Garret said of the upgrades. “We are doing things that really are responsible and need to be done.”
Some of the money will also be used to move sixth-graders into the district’s main campus.
By moving the sixth graders from the elementary schools to the district’s main campus, Garrett hopes it will help provide a more middle school type setting which could be beneficial to the students, as well as free up space in the elementary schools.
No timeline is set for the move, should the proposed project be approved, but he hopes the sixth graders are able to make the move in the 2021-22 school year.
According to Garrett, there would be an eight-cent increase in local taxes to help fund the project, bringing the school’s debt service rate from 24 cents per $100, to 32 cents.
The second determination hearing is set for Nov. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
