IWU hosts 2020 MLK Celebration featuring The Chicago Mass Choir

Indiana Wesleyan University will host its sixth annual MLK Celebration honoring Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday. The special community-wide event will honor King’s legacy with scripture and song throughout the evening, according to a news release.
Community members will come together at 7 p.m. for the MLK Celebration event featuring The Chicago Mass Choir. Thrilling audiences around the globe, The Chicago Mass Choir showcases penetrating vocals, dynamic musicianship, and stirring messages of hope and encouragement. It has had no less than sixteen albums reach the Billboard gospel charts, and it has garnered two Grammy, three Dove, and more than ten Stellar Award nominations.
In 2012 and 2015, the Chicago Music Awards named it the city’s Best Traditional Choir. The evening’s closing song will feature both the Chicago Mass Choir and the IWU Chorale.
The MLK Celebration event is free of charge and will take place in the Phillippe Performing Arts Center on IWU’s Marion campus. Doors open at 6 p.m. No tickets are required. There will be a reception in the Barnes Student Center Piazza immediately following the event.
“We look forward to the MLK Celebration because it brings together community, all communities,” said Dr. Joanne Barnes, dean of the graduate school and professor of leadership studies. “Let us worship together with the Chicago Mass Choir and continue on by serving the communities where we live and work.”
IWU’s annual MLK Celebration began in 2014 as a way to honor King’s legacy. Each year, the celebratory, community-wide event features a talented individual or group, such as local vocalists and musicians, renowned authors and remarkable choirs.
