The Kokomo Art Association is kicking off it’s inaugural “Mardi Gras Main Street Masquerade” on this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Artworks Gallery, located at 210 N. Main Street in downtown Kokomo.
Funds raised at this event will support the vision and mission of the association, which provides arts opportunities and education for the entire Kokomo community.
The event promises to be an authentic taste of New Orleans Mardi Gras including beads from the balconies, a selfie booth, live Jazz and Blues, plus food from the new Poulard’s Cajun Creole restaurant, Farm to Fork BBQ Bistro, Rozzi’s and libations from Mid-America beverages. The first 50 guests will receive masks and beads that are handcrafted by KAA artisans. A silent auction with several unique gift baskets will also be featured.
Guests will also have the opportunity to view a special exhibition developed by a Kokomo native, author and curator Robin Williams, an ethnographic story abut the Mardi Gras Indian culture in New Orleans. The exhibition was originally commissioned by the Center for Black Literature and Culture in Indianapolis and is based on a book “ Rhythm, Ritual & Resistance: Africa is Alive in the Black Indians of New Orleans”, which is part of the Smithsonian Library collection.
