Thousands of Grant County residents file for unemployment amid pandemic

Some new data from the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development is showing how much the coronavirus pandemic has impacted Grant County workers.
Last week 732 Grant County residents filed initial unemployment claims. It appears that the peak of unemployment claims came the final week of March, where nearly 1,100 initial claims were filed. That’s more than a 5,000% increase from the same week in 2019.

For the months of January and February of this year, the average number of unemployment claims per week was around 35.
Across the state, 178,00 Hoosiers filed for unemployment in the month of March. So far for the month of April, 108,000 Hoosiers have filed.
