Hoosiers will soon be receiving new Medicare cards without a social security number on it.
The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services was required to remove social security numbers from all Medicare cards by April of 2019. But the federal government will start mailing cards to Hoosiers in June of this year. The agency is replacing Social Security Numbers with a unique Medicare number to prevent fraud and to fight identity theft.
The Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017 restricts the inclusion of the numbers on documents mailed by the federal government.
