Arcelor-Mittal chemical spill kills fish on the Little Calumet River, closes beaches

Fish are going belly-up on the Little Calumet River due to a chemical spill.
Bruce Rowe from Indiana Sand Dunes National Park says multiple beaches were also closed by Lake Michigan last week.
The spill is linked to steel manufacturer Arcelor-Mittal, who reportedly released toxic levels of cyanide and ammonia into the water.
On Friday, Portage Mayor John Cannon said the state’s Department of Environmental Management knew of the spill nearly a week before contacting local leaders.
Hoosiers are urged to avoid the area while clean up efforts continue.
