Marion mayoral and council candidates to share vision for city at forum

The Marion mayoral and city council candidates are set to share their vision for the city at a special forum on Sept. 11 and 12th.
The event will be at the Marion Public Library. Both forums begin at 6 p.m.
The mayoral portion of the forum will run from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11th. All three mayoral candidates – Jess Alumbaugh (D), William Henry (I), and David Homer (R) – have been invited to participate.
After a short break, the at-large City Council candidates will take the stage from 7:15-8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11th. All six at-large candidates – Brian Cowgill (R), Evan Gilmore (D), Steve Henderson (R), Brad Luzadder (R), Javon Washington (D), and Torri Williams (D) – have been invited to participate.
The following evening – Thursday, Sept. 12th – will be the Ward City Council candidates’ chance to take the stage from 6-8 p.m. Five of the six wards have opposed races. Those ten candidates have been invited to participate. They are:
Ward 1: Gary T. Fordyce, Sr. (R) and Fred L. Troxell (D)
Ward 2: Mike Cline (R) and Jessy Pearson-Cheney (D)
Ward 3: Jim Brunner (R) and Paul Funches III (D)
Ward 4: Brian Brand (R) and Robin Fouce (D)
Ward 6: Nechelle Applewhite-Sanders (D) and Deborah Cain (R)
Marion voters are welcome to attend the forum, although seating is limited and will be available on a first-come basis. Local media are welcome to cover the event.
“The Chamber is proud to be part of this event — two community-focused organizations sponsoring an event where candidates can share their vision for Marion’s future,” said Kylie Jackson, the Chamber’s President and CEO. “This is a pivotal election for Marion and voters should be as informed as possible.”
Rather than a debate with questions from a panel followed by rebuttals, a moderator will pose questions to candidates individually, and candidates will not respond to other candidates’ answers. Questions will focus on topics such as the economy, economic development, and quality of life.
“The library is an important part of the city, and it has a responsibility to help voters make knowledgeable choices,” said Mary Eckerle, the library’s director. “One of a citizen’s most important duties is to vote, and this forum will provide voters with information to help them perform that duty.”
The forum’s sponsors are the Marion Public Library and the Marion-Grant County Chamber of Commerce.
For more information, contact the Marion Public Library at 668-2900 or the Marion-Grant County Chamber of Commerce at 664-5107. The forum will be broadcast live on WBAT.
