MHS Raiders fly by competition, earn first place in Ohio

The Marion High School JROTC Raider Team performed well in their second competition of the season at Wayne High School, Dayton, Ohio.
Following their third-place finish two weeks prior at Eastern Kentucky University, the Giants racked up multiple top finishes in the various events to easily claim the first place finish overall in this regional match last weekend.
“What a great showing for our Raiders,” said retired Lt. Col. David Farlow, the coach for the Marion team and senior Army instructor for the MHS JROTC program. “As we did in our last meet, we deliberately chose to compete four Lady Raiders in every event. This was a conscious decision on our part because we used this competition to help us prepare our team for the upcoming Raider State and National Championships later this fall. In both those competition, the teams must have four female competitors in each event.”
All the other 13 teams competed the minimum required two female cadets in each event.
“This was the first time we competed at this event, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect,” said Tayler Garriott, MHS Raider Team captain. “I was happy to see how well prepared we were for the events.”
The Giants earned three first-place and three second-place finishes in the various events, including a fast time of 2:10 on the 1-Rope Bridge event — more than a minute faster than the second-place team.
Other events at the Raider competition included the 2.5-Mile Relay, the Buddy Carry, the Physical Fitness Test, the Tire Flip, the HMMWV Pull and the Logistics Relay.
The next competition for the Raiders will be in Anderson on Oct. 5.
