AP names Serena Williams ‘Athlete of the Decade’

Tennis superstar Serena Williams has been named Associated Press’ Female Athlete of the Decade.

In ten years, Williams has won 12 Grand Slam singles, held the top-ranked spot in Women’s Tennis ratings for over three and a half years and at 38 has been in her prime while others are ending their careers.

Williams has also been a champion for women. She’s a working mom who has voiced healthcare inequality for African-American women after nearly dying during childbirth.

U.S. Tennis Association’s CEO Stacey Allaster said: “Whether it’s health issues; coming back from that, having a child; nearly dying from that, she has endured it all and she is still in championship form.”
