City of Marion giving away trees in partnership with GM, Marion Utilities

The following is an unedited press release from the City of Marion
The City of Marion is giving away trees in partnership with General Motors and Marion Utilities! General Motors has generously donated trees for giveaway as part of celebrating Earth Day. Since the Earth Day celebration was postponed, the giveaway will occur in a new way:
Parks & Recreation is taking orders ONLINE ONLY (first-come, first-served)…to be handed out at the Gardens of Matter Park on Monday, May 11th, from 4 – 7pm.
To order: Send a private message to the Gardens of Matter Park Facebook Page or email Taylere McCoy at tmccoy@cityofmarion.in.gov.
There are 250 total trees available and come in two species: Pin Oak and Shumard Oak. There are info sheets for each species along with this release. At this time, most of the Pin Oaks are around 6 – 12 in. tall, while the Shumard Oaks are 1 – 3 ft. tall. Heights are measured from the base of the stem/trunk to the top of the tree, so keep in mind that all trees have roots equal to the height of the tree. All trees are bare-root, meaning they are notin soil. They will be wrapped in wet newspaper and placed in a plastic bag for distribution. Plant your trees as soon as possible and keep the newspaper moist until the tree is planted. When an online order is placed, you’ll receive a response with detailed instructions for picking up as well as planting.
To avoid crowding, idling cars, and physical contact between staff and public, everyone is asked to remain in vehicles, and to arrive within your designated time slot given upon order placement. Trees will be placed in vehicles by staff wearing protective equipment.
The Earth Day celebration will be rescheduled, and new information is forthcoming. In the meantime, check the Earth Day 2020 Facebook Event through the Gardens of Matter Park or Marion Utilities Facebook Pages, and check out posts from these pages for eco-friendly tips year-round.
