Grant County will recognize Women’s Equality Day with a proclamation

Next Wednesday is Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting the right to vote to women. The amendment was first introduced in 1878. In 1971, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day, according to the National Women’s History Alliance.
This year, Women’s Equality Day remembers the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th amendment and the Grant County Commissioners want to help make it special. Ruthann Sumpter, regent for the local chapter for the Daughters of the American Revolution came before the commissioners to request they recognize that date with a proclamation.  The commissioners agreed and also agreed to let Sumpter host a celebration on the courthouse square that evening.
Sumpter said, “It’s a special day and it should be recognized as a special day.”
